Track overview Mt Majura and Mt Ainslie Wednesday Walk

Wednesday 12 October 2022: Wednesday Walk M-H: Mt Majura and Mt Ainslie. Heading off from the Mt Majura Antill St carpark, we climb to the summit of Mt Majura and then walk to Mt Ainslie, approaching the summit from the north. We descent via the Kokoda trail and then make our way back to the cars via the reserves on the fringes of Ainslie and Hackett. …. Approx. 15 km in length and 400m in elevation gain. ….. Meet at 9am: the meeting place is at the Mt Majura carpark on Antill Street carpark (near Justice Robert Hope Park).

Summary

From Garmin Connect – Distance: 15.83km | Climb: 662m | Time: 3:50 moving + 1:31 of stops = 5:21 | Grading: L/E; M(9).
A recently acquired Garmin HRM-Pro heart rate monitor tells me that my maximum heart rate whilst climbing to Mt Majura was 134bpm. Good thing I didn’t look at it at the time, or it would have given me a heart attack.

Track Notes

I was last in the Mt Majura area on 25 Sep 22 and the Mt Ainslie area on 1 Oct 22.

I’ll be back around here next Saturday, doing Stage 1 of the Canberra Centenary Trail. So this walk provided the perfect opportunity to scout the area, to have a walk and breathe a bit of fresh air, and to chat with friends.

Not much to say. The walk exactly as described. Morning tea on Mt Majura and lunch on Mt Ainslie. Super well led.

There are 60-odd timber steps up the northern approach to Mt Ainslie from the power line track. I prefer to use the treads and risers of the steps, rather than walk up closely beside them at a more even climb. I think the latter contributes to eventually undermining the steps, particularly by water damage in this current La Nina season. Similarly, I’d prefer to walk through water over a track, rather than broaden the track by skirting round the side of water. Then again, I’m a grumpy old man.
