Roger promised ghosts!

Monday evening 13 November 2023: Fairbairn Pine Forest Stroll – S/E. A fairly short evening / night walk around Fairbairn Pines visiting the Air Disaster Memorial, a cache and hopefully sighting a ghost. This short walk will start in daylight and finish in the dark in order to appreciate the ghostly things that go on here. According to Canberra’s Tim the Yowie Man – “it’s definitely got a reputation of being one of the most haunted spots in Canberra.”

Summary

From Garmin Connect (Epix Gen 2) – Distance: 5.16km | Climb: 125vm (Elev Corrections Enabled) | Time: 1:14 moving + 0:21 of caching and stops = 1:35 | Grading: S/E; E(4).

Here’s where we went.

Track Air Disaster Memorial

Trip Report

I hadn’t been to the Air Disaster Memorial before. Nearly didn’t today, as I guided Mark to the wrong meet point. Fixed via a phone call.

Hooray, correct meet point

Walking by 7.02pm. Some pretty paper daisies as we walked up the fire trail at the edge of the area, after passing the paint ball site.

Paper daisies

Geocaches were promised, the first GCA5MFZ Motorsport Madness, a lovely Tankengine cache. The second GCAEFAK Racecar Wreck. The third, another by Te, GC9NV29 Fairbairn Firingrange, Janet found for me.

We turned W then S. On the fly I set a waypoint for the ADM. Coming to an intersection I said “this way”. Roger said “that way”. Look at the map and you’ll see the explanation – the ADM (monument) is incorrectly positioned on the (2017) e-topo downloaded map.

A visit in the dark.

Ghosts were promised and we called in to see what was left of one.

Things along the way

A special cache, GCA8DZ4 AL Bonus – The Spooky Stories of Struggletown, logged.

Trotted back down the fire trails, finishing at 8.40pm.

Good one Roger, something for everyone! Trust your two first time guests were amused.

Party

6 walkers – Leila A, Janet D, Roger E (leader), Daniela P, Mark P, me.
