Yankee Hat has moved!
Yankee Hat is a peak to the west of the Yankee Hat car park. The car park is located at the locked gate on the northern end of Old Boboyan Road.
It is probable that the feature was named for its resemblance to the hat worn by ‘Yankees’, the (northern) Union Officers in the American Civil War.
But which one is it? The northern SH1447 or the higher southern SH1558?
The old TopoView 2006 digital maps I usually use in OziExplorer show the southern peak as Yankee Hat. The mosaic is sourced from Rendezvous Creek 8626-1S Second Edition 1:25000 topographic map copyright 2002 and Yaouk 8626-2N Second Edition 1:25000 topographic map copyright 2003.
AllTrails via its version of OpenStreetMaps (as at December 2022) shows similar.
I was trawling the NPA ACT website and found an article on page 34 of the March 2010 Bulletin by Graeme Barrow, following on from his article in the December 2009 Bulletin, pp 13-15. Graeme approached the NSW LPI and the name was changed to the northern peak.
You can check this via the SIX e-topo maps Rendezvous Creek 1:25000 copyright 2017 and Yaouk 1:25000 copyright 2017.
Also via GPS Visualizer, using the au-NSW: SIXMaps topo layer.
Good one Johnny Boy. Only 10 or so years late in picking this up.
