Beside the Mt Franklin Rd north of Pryors Hut

Saturday 16 August: Mount Gingera – L/M. I’m getting married in late September and would like to hold a buck’s bushwalk (though the walk isn’t gender specific). The walk will leave from Corin Dam, head up Stockyard Spur, heading past Pryors Hut, and then tackling the climb to Mount Gingera. All up, the walk is all on track, about 20 km long with about 1100 metres of climbing. How far we go on the day will depend on how much snow there is on the ground. If Corin Road is closed, I’ll put on an alternative walk. Map: Corin Dam. Leader: Nathan H. Bookings close 2 pm, Thursday 14 August. Transport: ~$12.

14 of us drove in 4 cars to Corin Dam.

Further Information

My Oxfam young things pulled out on me and with family and new grandson coming down from Sydney for the weekend, Nathan kindly allowed me and one other to join his walk and hurry back a little earlier.

Summary

Distance: 20.0km | Climb: 1150m | Time: 8.30am-3.20pm (6hrs 50mins), with 30 mins of breaks | Grading: L/M; H(13)

Track Notes

Nathan was fortunate in that we didn’t make him wear a pink tutu or anything. A cool morning, but not as bitterly cold as several recent ones.

A respectable 55mins for the 2.2km and 55om climb to the helipad on Stockyard Spur.

After a regroup we continued along the vehicle track, pretty soon running into a bit of snow, then larger amounts covering the track in sheltered places. By the time we reached the view points, there was plenty about. On to join the Mt Franklin Rd, then south to Pryors Hut. This leg 5.3km in 1hr 40mins. There were 4 tents outside the hut and we later ran into some of the 6 occupants snow shoeing on the Gingera ridge. A bite of morning tea.

Continuing south along the Mt Franklin Rd we came to Snowy Flats Creek. The culvert has been done up and there is easy access to the water. Plenty of snow as we turned up the Gingera footpad; very good cover at the broad saddle where the pad turns west and on up to the top. A couple in the party had poles which made the hard going in the snow a little easier. Gerald was leading the party on this leg and did a very fine job. When you could see the wooden steps towards the top, he was right on them. We wandered south to the guyed pole (which is now no longer upright). This leg 2.5km in 1hr 5mins,climbing 200m.

During lunch, Jenny presented a beautiful bowl, hand-turned by Rob, to Nathan (and Laura) on our behalf. Plenty of the white stuff about. Two other walkers arrived as we were about to leave and we saw two of the six snow shoers.

An uneventful trip back, 9.8km in 2hrs 30mins. A couple of families with small children on the bottom steps above Corin Dam.

A great destination, made even more special by the snow. And a unique bucks party celebration. Great idea Nathan!
