Track Southern Mindjagari Track Geocaching – Snowy Corner Traverse

Trip Report

Warning: This is an Australian Walking Track Grading System Grade 5 hike.

I was last up to Mt Domain on 22 Mar 25 and down the Snowy Corner Track on 3 Jun 25. It’s been a while since I’ve done this same trip, last on 22 Apr 24. 6:33 then, 6:18 today.

This was an excellent trip. 3 strong walking companions to hold my hand and walk up front as I gasped along in the rear. 2 hugely experienced geocachers to make the finds and log me on. And 2 First to Finds (FTF) for our group – my first ever! Throw in a blue-sky day, huge scenery and a great natural track – “you wouldn’t be dead for quids”.

The Snowy Corner Traverse can be divided into 4 legs.

Leg 1: Fishing Gap car park to Fishing Gap – 3.7km, 58mins

Start at the Fishing Gap car park Mindjagari Track signage.

Leg 2: Fishing Gap to Mt Domain – 2.5km, 1hr 35mins

Fishing Gap

The Snowy Corner Traverse Track is marked with a number of track markers. They’re marked on the track map and in the gpx file as SCT nn (Snowy Corner Traverse).

My companions certainly had to wait for me at the top of the first climb towards Mt Domain, at the ‘nose’ where the track levels out for a while.

The going at the nose where track levels

After negotiating that steep climb, the level going is a pleasant change for a short while.

The going on the level area

It finishes at an open area, at the bottom of the final climb to Mt Domain.

Cairns in open area below Mt Domain

The final climb includes a nice rocky spur.

Track to Mt Domain runs up rocky spur

There are a few cairns on the track. This one is half cairn, half rock stack. I dislike the latter, but this marker was useful as you can just see the top of it as you climb steeply up the track.

Cairn or rock stack?

At last the Mt Domain cairn.

Mt Domain cairn

A few tens of metres further north is an open area with views, perfect for smoko.

Leg 3: Mt Domain to Ashbrook/Cow Flat Creeks saddle – 1.4km, 1hr 5mins

View west from just N of Mt Domain

Once down off Mt Domain, there are a couple of knolls to be enjoyed.

Next comes my favourite spot on the hike.

My favourite spot on the Tidbinbilla Range crest

The drop down towards the saddle used to be a bugga. On my last full traverse in Apr 24 it was hard going through the tight scrub. Not so now.

Descending to saddle at 1390m contour

Towards the bottom of the descent, the first geocache of the day was logged, GCBE3VX Along the Mindjagari Trail. All my Christmases came at once and I can die happy – a first to find (FTF) for the group. Probably never again for me.

And at the saddle a second FTF was logged, GCBE09T Mindjagari.

Leg 4: Ashbrook/Cow Flat Creeks saddle to Snowy Corner cairn – 1.7km, 1hr 5mins

Not much of a view to the west from the saddle.

View west at saddle

This leg climbs north from the saddle, then drops down to the Shale Knoll.

It’s a unique formation.

Heading down to the Shale Knoll

Great views east.

And west.

2 more geocaches were logged, GCBDZ2W Bendora Dam and Waterfall Views, GCBDN1R On the way to Mount Domain.

Leg 5: Snowy Corner cairn to Mountain Creek car park – 2.8km, 1hr 33mins including lunch

Decision Time – Top of Snowy Corner Track

A little way down the Snowy Corner Track is the most magnificent new bench.

Nice seat

It overlooks a huge view and makes a great lunch spot.

Nice view

New camera with macro ability, so I tested it out.

Orchids

Same track markers, different words.

Down the bottom, Mountain Creek has a different sort of beauty.

Mountain Creek

Our trip 12.3km and 925vm, which aligns with the signed distance of 11.5km and climb of 900vm. But our time was 6:18 and the suggested time 5 hrs.

Huge thanks boys. Trust you enjoyed the hike.

The AllTrails map is here, where you can pan and zoom.

Party

4 walkers – Roger E (Marmaduke Rothschild), Martin E (TivkaNZ), Leon S, me (JohnnyBoyACT).
