Track Notes
I was last in this area on 25 Jul 17, coming down the creek line.
Further discoveries concerning temperature data stored in Garmin Activities (when tempe sensor is active).
Walked from the entrance to the Rob Roy Nature Reserve at the end of Crespin Place Banks. Grasslands at first, with a couple of drainage line crossings, as I walked south.
On the south side of the last spur, a bit of dense shrubbery. Animal pads helped as I crossed a low fenceline. The going got a bit steep as I neared the Rob Roy Falls creek.
I spent some time looking for geocache GC9VW4N RobRoy’s Roar and trying not to fall down the cliff (my balance is not so good these days). But the real lesson learned was to pre-read the cache hint. For this one it was “Hanging in crevice – head high when standing on rock platform at water level.” Not much good when I was 15m above the river, but I did test the “WARNING – the landscape around the river is very steep in places, and there are cliffs and sheer drops! Only attempt this series if you are a competent hiker!”
A bit of colour about.
Tested sms and email messaging to and from my dear wife using the MAP66i, then turned round for home.
A different way through the shrubs, crossing the fence at ‘Low fence 2’.

Garmin Connect and tempe temperature data
At home, after the Map66i syncs with the Garmin services (Connect and Explore, mobile and desktop apps), I fire up the Connect desktop app and see:
So I get Average, Minimum and Maximum Temperatures for the trip (the data fields on the MAP66i show average temperature, but 24 hour minimum and maximum).
The MAP66i has access to weather data via the inReach service, so it knows wind speed and direction. 13kph from the north today (see top right of track on Google map):
Apply wind chill factor from, say, here.
So this arvo’s wander minimum feels like temperature was 8°C.
Not everyone’s cup of tea, but it amuses me.
Party
Just moi and tempe.
28 June 2022 Big Monks, Little Monks and around – more technobabble

Track Notes
I often do this walk as daily exercise, as it’s right in my backyard. I was last here on a blogged trip on 31 Dec 21.
I’m recording this little ditty as a memory jogger for me, as I continue to be amazed by the interconnectedness and wealth of technobabble provided by Garmin products and services. I have a new little boy’s toy – a Garmin tempe wireless temperature sensor. It connects to the MAP66i GPSr via my mobile’s bluetooth. Up until today I was a little underwhelmed by the data fields available in the MAP66i, viz: Temperature, 24 hr Max. Temp. and 24 hr Min. Temp. The minimum temperature shown is often 6°C, probably in my bedroom when I get up. What I discovered today is the Garmin Activity temperature plot (see screenshot above). The MAP66i Temperature field would be the average temperature.
Anyway, first the track notes. Up the Banks Steep Track, managing to puff my way with no stops. Chatted with some walkers on the fire trail on the NE flank of Big Monks. They were heading to Mt Rob Roy. Up to Big Monks, noting that the summer thistles are drying and starting to lie down. Slightly easier progress. Best approach is to continue to the little saddle between Big and Little Monks where a footpad has developed between the two. Lovely views as usual. Played with PeakFinder.
Over to the Kurrajong tree on ‘Little Monks’ for similar views.
Then through the grass and (not so bad) thistles south to the next knoll.
A look-see over the crest, then back to the NE.
Through a squelchy drainage line and up to join the FT. Headed back, with a detour at the bottom to check out the creek behind the flood mitigation weir.

Garmin Connect and tempe temperature plot
At home, after the MAP66i syncs with the Garmin services (Connect and Explore, mobile apps websites), I fire up the Connect desktop app and see:
You can play the track via the > icon.
Activating the expand icon on the temperature plot shows:
The grey is the temperature plot and I’m now happy with what is recorded. Elevation and Pace plots overlaid.
The green is the elevation profile, showing things like the steepness of the Banks Steep Track at beginning and end.
The blue is the pace. The first stop is through the lower gate near the start of the walk, the second when I stopped to talk with two girls, the third on Big Monks as I played with PeakFinder, the other little ones as I stopped to take photos.
Not everyone’s cup of tea, but it amuses me.
Party
Just moi, tempe and PeakFinder.
