View down to the sand bar on the Shoalhaven River

Tuesday 23 July 2024: Nadgigomar Nature Reserve – Durran Durra Section – M/R. This is a mainly off-track bushwalk in the Durran Durra section of the Nadgigomar Nature Reserve, which is east of the Shoalhaven River, and 14 kilometres to the north of Braidwood. From the Euradux Road entrance we will follow a maze of spurs and gullies through mature low open-forests, and woodlands, that have not experienced major fire for several decades. We’ll stop near the Shoalhaven River for lunch before returning on a different route. Suitable for experienced off-track walkers. We’ll take a different route to the 15th of June bushwalk in the same reserve.

Trip Report

I was last in this area with Ian on 6 Jun 17. I last did a Tuesday walk on 15 Oct 19.

I screwed up my courage and booked on a Tuesday walk led by Ian and frequented by other tough walkers, reminding him of my uphill speed and heavy breathing. I survived, although my bubble was burst when he commented that this was an easy one.

Picked up from my front door by Garry (thank you very much) and whisked in the big 4X4 via Bungendore, outskirts of Braidwood, Dawsons Lane, and the Euradux Rd to the entrance of the Nadgigomar Nature Reserve.

The start

A little way along the Durran Durra FT we left it to visit the first POI.

Some lovely open woodland country was then crossed, making for very pleasant walking.

Open woodland walking just before smoko

Lots of trees had scribbles on them.

Something’s been scribbling on this tree

Morning tea was called early in the sun, before crossing a shaded gully and climbing the other side. I was assured it was the main climb for the day … until the next.

We headed NE across a gully or two, to descend to the Shoalhaven River.

Heading down to the Shoalhaven River

We crossed onto a sand bank.

Our leader Ian on a Shoalhaven sand bank

We walked it downstream to where it petered out.

Roo tracks and foot tracks

Then crossed back into the bush.

Crossing back to the bush

We took the high road down along the river, crossing yet another gully.

Crossing a side gully

Of course a climb out followed, but it led up to a great view down to the river.

Some nice flat, even downhill, going followed.

Open walking before lunch

Back down to another sandbank for lunch.

The afternoon’s route took us down through gullies and up along spurs to the SE and S. A nice little rock overhang soon after lunch.

Small overhang descending into first gully after lunch

Some nice patches of she oaks and reedy bits.

Arvo tea country

In keeping with the abandoned car near the start, an old bus near the finish.

Old bus

Great to be back doing Tuesday Walks, although I doubt I’d keep up with these folk on serious hills. Thanks for accepting me Ian and for others’ company.

Party

8 walkers – Garry B, Joe C, Michael C, Mike L, Marguerite S, Lelde V, Ian W (leader), me.
