The dry creek below Cypress Pine Lookout

Saturday 16 June: North Bushfold Flats and ‘Mt Evans’ – L/M,ptX. The northern end of Bushfold Flats is less often visited. It contains several early 20th century European hut sites. In addition, a good walking friend shared his 1979 Outward Bound notes with me, in which he recorded a visit to ‘Mt Evans’ at a compass bearing of “Mt Evans to Mt Tennent 150 degrees from magnetic north”. It is SH1008 on our current topographic maps. We’ll walk the Australian Alps Walking Track from the Namadgi Visitors Centre, turning off before we reach Victoria where it enters Bushfold Flats. After visiting some of the sites, we’ll walk north to a geocache at the end of the map-marked track. Then off-track NE to SH1008, returning via a steep gully to the Blue Gum Creek ford. Our return is all on track from there. Around 19km and 900m climb with all but 5km on track. Map: Williamsdale. Leader: John Evans john@johnevans.id.au 0417436 877. Transport: ∼$5. Limit: 12.

Track Notes

So the forecast weather – rain, snow, possible thunderstorms, high winds – didn’t eventuate. We had a chilly, but mostly sunny day. That was the best of it.

We visited the Mouat Tree in the Namadgi Visitors Centre precinct.

A slow trip up to the T-intersection of the AAWT and the link track to the Mt Tennent Fire Trail. A coupe of early starters that were coming down reported a bit of snow at the Tongs Sheepyard site area. One of our party was off their oats today, so the other three went on to play in the snow, then back and down the AAWT to Bushfold Flats and visited the southern hut. We two went back down. We drove back to town, then I came back and got some way up the hill again to meet the others coming down.

Nice to see other walkers on the track today, all of us beating the weather.

For me, no geocache and my feet are still very sore. Oh well.
