This was a great morning, suggested by Fox in Jox. For me, friends from 3 important areas of my life – Eternity Church, Canberra Bushwalking Club and geocaching. On top of that, the chance to coat-tail on a mutli-cache which is one of the 30 in Canberra’s Toughest Challenge.
A few of us met at my old folks home and drove to Orange Thorn Cres in Banks. We were under the watchful eye of mtbikeroz (the cache owner) who tagged along primarily to be amused by our efforts.
Up the creek without a paddle we went. Michael the muggle on his first wander in the bush did admirably, as he’s super fit. At WP1 the first find was made, then so on as each new rock revealed the next waypoint. Robyn made me feel a lot better by saying that I was contributing many negative finds. As a scientist, she said these are important; but not so much in geocaching, I think. But I did contribute by finding one waypoint. These cachers are very experienced and I’d certainly not find all the intermediate waypoint rocks by myself. At each stop mtbikeroz, with a smile on his face, observed from a distance.
At some stage we enjoyed views down onto the Royalla solar farm. After 6 intermediate waypoints, we found the location of the final GZ for GC1ZPAM On the Rocks and logged it with some satisfaction. Great group effort!
Our return eventually brought us through the gate on the fire trail which ends at the intersection to the east of Big Monks. During the return, three of the party deviated to other secret geocaching locations and rejoined us with satisfied smiles.
We then all headed to another nearby mtbikeroz cache. It’s called Vertigo. At the posted location one finds a test tube containing “an accelerometer, which is used to measure the centrifugal force, and a gyrometer, which counts the rotation. This is all integated into one tiny chip, an MPU6050.” The go is to hold the test tube at arms length, spin yourself at at least 1 rotation per second at least 10 times then, if you can, read off from the LED display the location of the final GZ. Fox in Jox finally stepped up to the plate and got the readout for us. Another satisfying log of GC759QP Vertigo.
Robyn ran back to catch up on the rest of her day and we gents strolled back. Three of us had a cool drink back at my old folks home.
