Walk Description

This walk was organised and led by Ian "the granite hunter" W as a private walk:

Saturday 20 April: More Breakfast Creek Granite. A wander around some more granite to the N of Breakfast Creek.

4 of us drove from Canberra to the Yankee Hat car park. Wonderful to be driven!

Further Information

This walk originated on the previous Wednesday night at the CBC monthly meeting. There were a few of us at a loose end and Ian had the cure.

Track Notes

4.3km in 50mins down the Old Boboyan Rd to Ian's selected turn off point. A 2.2km leg in 1hr 10mins to the SW, initially through open forest and then a bit of rubbish as we climbed beside a flowing un-named feeder creek to Bogong Creek. A near mutiny, as it was nearly 10.30am, till morning tea was called. Cold in the overcast conditions and breeze when stopped - needed extra layers and shell.

I must say that this was a superb party. All excellent walkers, knowing what it's all about, cohesive party, no need for our leader to control us (grin). Plus an 'all-care-no-responsibility' attitude when one is not leading; throw in a passenger seat ride - perfecto.

We climbed a little more, then turned N and sidled at around 1350m through delightful open forest. So to Ian's first granite for the day, a complex stack with lots of components, caves and slots. We spend a good 20mins exploring round and about it.

From there, NW for 400m, crossing the top of a drainage line which may well provide easier access to the area - although I see on the map now that it bends away to the N towards the corner of the cleared area SW of Frank and Jacks Hut.

So to a precinct that Linda named 'The Granite Garden'. A wonderful area of scattered granite tors that we'd previously visited on 20 Nov 12. She plans to reschedule a walk here - I'd grab the chance to be on it, if I were you.

Then, a couple of hundred metres to the N, we arrived at a huge flat-topped granite boulder with views further N to the Gudgenby grasslands. A perfect lunch spot.

I do enjoy a connected walk - was able to ring Gay, post a lunch photo to FaceBook and, just after lunch, enjoy a Skype video chat with my grand-daughter in San Diego!

That was it for today's granite. A generally E-ish wander back to hit the Old Boboyan Rd at the corner where the footpad to Hospital Creek Hut heads off to the E of the road. Then a bash back to the car.

We spotted a large wedge-tailed eagle on the ground/in a tree as we left the car park; and the (I reckon, as it just stands and watches you in a non-slinking manner) town-dropped dog that I'd previously seen on 10 Nov 12.

Thanks Ian - a lovely stroll.
