16 April 2013 Bogong Creek, Middle Creek View SW through NE from SH1582 - Mt Mouat, E Scabby Range to 1730+m feature, Mt Burbidge, Mavis Ridge, Burbidge spur Maps: Yaouk and Rendezvous Creek 1:25000 Walk Description This walk was organised and led by Brian S as an irregular CBC Tuesday walk: Tuesday 16 April: Bogong Creek, Middle Creek - L/R,ptX. Transport: ~$50 per car. 4 of us met at 5.45am and drove to the Yankee Hat car park. Exactly 50km from Kambah shops car park. A quick 3.2km in 35mins along the Old Boboyan Rd, fire trails and over the top causeway over Bogong Creek to the point where we left the fire trail. By now we were warmed up. Found a nice buff on the ground and pocketed it, not only to remove the blight on the landscape. Yellow - not my colour - contact me if it's yours. Our trip in to Bogong Creek Falls was pretty much the same line as 29 Jan 13, except today we stayed high as we approached the falls. And a little quicker - on 29 Jan 13, 5km in 2hrs 10mins; today 4.9km in 1hr 50mins. An appropriate spot for morning tea, overcast with just a couple of spots of shower. (Interesting, on my walk to Bogong Creek Falls we had lunch here. Brian certainly set a quick pace today!) Unfortunately, the easy walking was over. It was hard going above the falls and after traversing an open bog feeding in above the falls, we struck good scrub. We knew we wouldn't make the top of Bogong Creek so Brian modified his plans to 'if it gets too thick, we'll turn right'. You can see from the track that we did that. The second time we climbed 120m through pick-up-sticks to near the crest, then sidled NW through pick-up-sticks and up to granite slabs (1.1km taking 1hr 2mins) near SH1582. It was worth it for the view! Even though it was only 11.50am we stopped for lunch. Views E to the Gudgenby grasslands and S of E to the Yankee Hats. Excellent views SW through NE to Mt Mouat (the Fortress), E Scabby Range to 1730+m feature, Mt Burbidge, Mavis Ridge and Burbidge spur. I have to do this East Scabby Range section sometime this year, as the ACT border runs along the top. Our exit was obvious. Below us, NW along the Yankee Hat Ridge, was a saddle. The land dropped away steeply to the E down into feeder creeks and arms of Middle Creek. Negotiating the top of the exit was not so obvious, as the direct line to the saddle consisted of a granite slab with 10m drop. We came off to the West, then struggled NW round the nose of the granite. Huge slab on one side, near impenetrable scrub on the other - indeed, between a rock and a hard place! At last we could turn E and began the plunging swim through regrowth. At least there were no pick-up-sticks on this side. Slow progress from SH1582 to the 1300m contour - 1km taking 45mins and dropping 280m. The gradient began to ease and it was reasonably pleasant walking as we continued E to the open area near the end of the old vehicle track. The usual stroll back to the Yankee Hat car park. Summary Distance: 19.0km Climb: 650m. Time: 6.50am - 2.55pm (8hrs 5 mins), with 40mins of breaks. Walk Participants 4 walkers - Cynthia C, John H, Brian S, me.
