Getting There

This walk was organised and led by Phillip S and Edwina Y as a CBC walk:

Friday 6 April - Mt Palerang - M/M. Palerang is a mountain near the Great Dividing Range south of the Kings Highway (the pointy one on the right as you approach Braidwood). Access is via Rossi and Forbes Creek. On a clear day you can see Braidwood, the Budawangs and the Brindabellas. The access ridges have moderate scrub and a few scrambles; there are also a few kilometres of fire trail walking. Map: Bombay. Leaders: Phillip S and Edwina Y. Bookings to Edwina. Transport: ~160 km return, ~$60 per car, ~$15–$20 per person. Limit: 12.

13 of us met in Queanbeyan. Another 2 joined us on the way. We drove via the Kings Highway, Captains Flat Rd, Briars Sharrow Rd, Plains Rd, Hoskinstown Rd, Forbes Creek Rd and the Mulloon Fire Trail to the picnic area just over the Mulloon Creek ford.

Track

Last time I was in this area was 17 Aug 10.

Footpads lead from the track head, heading up the spur to the E. A good start, but eventually one has to leave them to stay climbing the spur. Generally easy going. At around the 100m contour, the hill side dropping away to the left clears. Half left one gains the first good view of Mt Palerang, quite a sharp little peak. We found morning tea around 10.20am at GR35355-75007 (MGA94) on a bit of a flat knoll.

A couple of hundred metres further E, we curved around to the N and walked down through open forest to the saddle. A lovely grassy area after a rainy summer. From the saddle, a climb up the S-facing damp slope, through a little bit of annoying tea-tree, then out onto the open, rocky spine that approaches Mt Palerang from the S. Great views.

A few ups and downs. The final climb to Mt Palerang looks tree-y as you approach, but turns out to be another nice climb through relatively open timber. The huge trig cairn suddenly appears.

A great spot for lunch atop it in the dappled shade, although the view is a little closed in. A wedge-tailed eagle soared quite close to us and a little below. Quite light in colour from the top. With a bit of technology and good mobile reception, posted a photo to FaceBook.

A new (for me) exit, plunging straight down to the E. Phillip never ceases to amaze me with such as this (the last one off the side of Johns Peak). But he knows what he's doing and had recced the walk and we soon came onto an easy footpad that took us NW down a prominent spur. We turned N off the track several hundred metres prior to reaching the Mulloon Fire Trail, just to enjoy a bit more of the open, dry spur.

A toddle of around 3km back to the cars.

A nice day. Thanks to Phillip S and Edwina Y, and Barb V, Gavin F, Gerald D, Jeff B, Linda S, Margo C, Mike B, Quentin M, Ralph Y, Stephen and Lisa M and Tom G.

Distance: 9.6km Climb: 600m. Time: 9.00am - 2.30pm (5hrs 30mins), including 1hr 5mins of breaks.
Grading: M/M; M(10)
