I've seen plenty of evening rambles to this area and, after reading the above book that Rob H loaned me, decided I should go. Not exceptional, so glad I went alone, but quite interesting up around the new Canberra International Arboretum plantings (which are quite extensive over the back of the hill from the Parkway); a good view from Dairy Farmers Hill lookout; and, again, plenty of water in the Molonglo River to make it roar. A very Canberra-ish walk (dur - it's in Canberra), emphasizing the noise and quiet of our bush capital. Rushing, noisy traffic on the Tuggeranong Parkway, William Hovell Drive and Coppins Crossing Road; but silent hot air balloons, kangaroos and things. We are very fortunate to have such areas a stones-throw away from home. 3.6km in 55mins for the first leg. I couldn't identify the Wollemi Pines in the Arboretum - perhaps they've secreted them away somewhere. Lovely stand of Cedars and a look across to the Cork Oaks. Beautiful and green. Great view over Scrivener Dam/Lake Burley Griffin and Canberra from Dairy Farmers Hill lookout. 5.2km in 1hr along forestry trails from Dairy Farmers Hill lookout to Misery Point. The latter is not miserable at all. It's on private property. The wonderful loop in the Molonglo was at it's best with wide pools and rushing cascades. Misery Point back to the car was 6.7km in 1hr 20mins. Not as pleasant as the outward leg when returning alongside the Parkway. Ideas for the next Worn Boot Bash? Distance: 15.4km Climb: 200m. Time: 5.50 - 9.10am (3hr 20mins) with no stops. KMZ file for Google Earth/Maps: Dairy Farmers Hill and Misery Point |
