Facebook

In October 2008 I started up a Facebook presence. Two reasons - to 'evangelise' the bushwalking message and to try using a little more 'free' storage. I've put some of the photos (except those identifying individuals) from walks up there, including the track. My photo albums are at:

You don't need a Facebook account to access these public photo albums - just click on the links above. HOWEVER, on rechecking some (not so) old walk reports, it seems that the public links to photos expire. So if you don't have a Facebook account and are not a friend of mine, you can't see the photos. That's not much chop. Someone suggested trying Flickr - I will. Ended up with Google's Picasa from walk 19 May 09 on.

Here's some empirical data on what seems to be happening with photos on Facebook:

• I take a photo on a walk eg. 2008 10 21 Cascades and pool Bungonia Creek. Loaded from my camera to PC it is 3888*2592 pixels and uses 5.553MB of storage
• Using Irfanview and EGG, I reduce it in size and 80% quality to 800*533 (around 800*600) pixels and 148KB, plus a thumbnail of 100*67 pixels and 2.62KB - these are for blog published photos
• Uploaded to Facebook, it is stored as 471*315 pixels and 75.5KB, plus a thumbnail of 75*49pixels and 2KB - these are for Facebook published photos
• (add in details for Picasa/make a Picasa page).

So, the options to use one of my photos (don't forget to credit me, will you?) are:

• ask me for an original and I'll email it to you
• use the version on my blog at about 20% the size of the original and several orders of magnitude of storage less
• use the version from Facebook at about 10% the size of the original and several orders of magnitude of storage less
• (add in details for Picasa/make a Picasa page).

From May 2009 I began referencing my walks on Facebook, with a link to the walk report on my blog and a linkk to the photos stored on Picasa.
