Saturday 4 July 2026: Walking the predator-proof fence of the Woodland Sanctuary in Goorooyarroo NR– Trigs and Nature Reserves #10 * – L/M. From Wildbark, a counter-clockwise circuit of the fence in Goorooyarroo NR. We’ll leave at the Buru (Kangaroo) Gate 14 to climb to Old Joe for lunch, then return back down to continue along the fence. Most of the hike is on the fence maintenance track. Around 17km and 450vm climb.

Track Predator-proof fence of the Woodland Sanctuary in Goorooyarroo NR

Trip Report

I was last in Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve on 30 May 26 (walk #1739) and walked the predator-proof fence in Mulligans Flat on 20 Jun 26 (walk #1746).

We started from Wildbark, heading south along the fence. Sullivans Creek leaves the NR near the Ganimang (Smokey Mouse) Gate 19.

Easy walking on the fence maintenance track took us to the main southern entrance to Goorooyarroo NR, the Mandawari (Bandicoot) Gate 17. From here, the fence flanks the eastern hills (Gecko Hills, Old Joe Hill and Gooroo Hill) on the west side of the crest. Great views to snow on the Brindies.

I had planned for lunch on Old Joe, but we reached the Buru Gate at 9.40am and began the climb up.

We were up the top at 10.00am, a bit early for lunch.

So we enjoyed smoko. A beautiful day, just a gentle cool breeze up high.

To remain true to the trip plan, we had to descend to the Buru Gate to regain the fence. A nice full dam nearby.

We moved to the outside of the fence at the Banggu Gate for the gentler climb to Gooroo Hill.

Here, the CBC walk paused and we went on a private trip just across the fence to the Gooroo trig in NSW.

Heading back to the legal side of the fence to rejoin the CBC walk, another group appeared on Gooroo Hill. It was Sal’s trip.

The next leg down off Gooroo Hill revealed a few ACT-NSW border markers.

Down at the Old Coach Road signage, we entered Mulligans Flat NR.

We walked the fence to the Grassland Gate, where the old (Mulligans Flat area) and new (Goorooyarroo area) parts of the Woodland Sanctuary meet.

Near the Bustard Gate, we visited the Dungarvon orchard, then went on to the Dungarvon Homestead site with its cigar-shaped frog bricks.

Here, a decision presented. Having walked the fence between Goorooyarroo and Mulligans Flat last fortnight, we could either redo that or cut for home. We decided on the latter, especially as Inglewood had tables and seats for lunch. We headed to the SW. Plenty of water lying about – Mulligans Flat is flat.
