Getting There

This walk was organised and led by Max S as an ad-hoc hard BBC Tuesday walk:

Tuesday 24 July - Gourock Range-Tallaganda Forest - M+. Folks: This Tuesday’s offering is an ad-hoc walk to land unknown to me. Likely to be medium grade but it will depend on what we find. Start somewhere along South Forest Way off Captains Flat to Braidwood Rd. Mostly along FT and track with excursions to climb Tumatbulla Mtn and Round Mount etc and explore some ridge lines and points of interest off-track. Say 15 km and 500 m. Map Kain. Weather - Partly cloudy. Winds west to northwesterly and light. Overnight temperatures falling to between minus 1 and 2 above zero with daytime temperatures reaching between 11 and 14. Leave Canberra about 7.30. Please advise interest with mobile no – car arrangements to be arranged accordingly Max.

6 of us met at 7.30am and travelled in 2 cars to Captains Flat, then via Captains Flat Rd and south along South Forest Way to just shy of Round Mount.

"To cover myself against complaints of not meeting expectations, on reviewing the walk it is more like 12-13 km as follows Drive to 295/480 on Sth Forest Way Start walk say 9.30 Ascend Round Mtn off track (200 m climb) and return to Sth Forest Way – 2 km – say 1.0 hrs Along Gum Ck rd to Cowangerong FT and to Tumatabulla Mtn 300 m climb and 5 km – say 1.25 hr Down ridge off track to Nick’s Rd – 2.5 km say 1.25 hrs Along Nicks Rd and Sth forest Way to car – 3 km Say 0.75 hr Walk time 4.25 hrs plus 1.00 hr stops. Return to cars about 2.45. Back at Southland shops about 4.45 This is my approximate assessment and is subject to change."

A delightful area of forest. The occasional huge stump from old logging. Not a quick trip up Round Mount, as one of our party was a bit crook. A lovely hill with an old tin disc trig in fine nick.

Back down to South Forest Way and along to Gum Creek Rd. After a stop for morning tea, along the latter to a point where we dropped packs and swanned up into the bush, looking to spy the unshaded area (rock?) on the map. Nothing to see. So back down to our packs and along to Cowangerong fire trail.

Along it to Tumatbulla Mountain, a most unprepossessing SH1321 on the side of the road. Lunch.

Plan B took us along CPT 2451-1 Road to join Nicks Rd, rather than down the spur through SH1251 and SH1197. Nicks Rd to join South Forest Way and so back to the cars.

Distance: 16.2km Climb: 650m. Time: 9.00am - 3.15pm (6hrs 15mins), with 50mins of breaks.
